Samuel West was born in 1731 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts, graduated from Harvard in 1754, and died in Tiverton, Rhode Island, 1807. He married, fathered six children, and served as pastor of a congregational church in Dartmouth, Massachusetts from 1761 until 1803. In between, he was a chaplain in the Continental Army and later served as a member of the Massachusetts Convention for adopting the new United States Constitution.
